Why More Skincare Actives Do Not Mean Better Results

Sitting with Saumya, our R&D formulator, we were reviewing a brief built around a long list of skincare actives. The assumption was familiar: more actives should mean a stronger formula. But our first question was different. Did every active have a clear purpose, a workable concentration and a reason to be there?

Active count has become a marketing metric. Packs lead with percentages and ingredient tallies. What rarely gets asked is whether those actives are dosed correctly, stable together, and able to reach skin in a form that works.

Active count is the easiest number to put on a pack. It says very little about how the finished formula performs on skin, or how consistently it holds up across a shelf life.

Skincare actives are ingredients included to produce a defined effect on skin, such as exfoliation, pigment regulation or barrier repair. Adding more of them raises performance only when each active is correctly dosed, compatible, stable and delivered within the formula.

Longer Ingredient Lists Do Not Guarantee Effective Dosing

Saumya’s review of that brief began with one test: whether each active had a meaningful role at a workable level. The question was never how many could fit, but why each one needed to be there.

An INCI list names ingredients. It does not show concentration. Some actives may appear at levels below those typically associated with a meaningful functional contribution. The name still sits on the label, and the consumer has no way to tell the difference.

Every Active Needs a Defined Formulation Purpose

Each active should map to a concern and a mechanism: exfoliation, pigment regulation, barrier support or soothing. Two actives addressing the same concern through similar mechanisms do not automatically create additional benefit. Sometimes they do. Often the case has to be made. Skincare actives help men target oiliness, breakouts, shaving irritation, pigmentation, ageing, hydration, and barrier support. Everyday skincare must also fit urban routines, stress and limited time.

That same thinking continues across our formulation team. When Neha reviews a formula, she asks what each active is there to do. If the only answer is label appeal, it comes out. Selection is where formulation judgement starts.

Active selection is the first decision in formulation architecture. Every ingredient that stays in the formula has to earn its place through purpose, dose and compatibility with the rest of the system.

Active Ingredient Concentration Governs Efficacy and Tolerability

Concentration is where many brands push hardest. A higher percentage reads as a stronger product. In the lab, active ingredient concentration is a balance between how an active performs and how skin tolerates it.

Higher Concentration Does Not Always Deliver Proportional Results

Raising a percentage does not always raise results in the same proportion. Formula context decides how much of an active actually performs.

  • Absorption limits: Research on topical L-ascorbic acid found skin uptake stopped rising in step with concentration beyond a point.
  • pH and free acid: For exfoliating acids such as glycolic acid, formula pH shapes how much acid is actually available to skin.
  • Vehicle and solubility: Poor solubility or an unsuitable vehicle can limit how effectively an active is incorporated and delivered.

Higher Percentages Can Raise Irritation and Barrier Risk

Tolerability is part of efficacy. A formula that irritates rarely stays in a routine long enough to work.

  • Dose-linked irritation: Retinol and exfoliating acids can cause more redness, dryness and peeling as levels rise.
  • Barrier stress: Overly aggressive combinations of exfoliating or potentially irritating actives can compromise barrier comfort and increase transepidermal water loss.
  • Consumer usability: A product that stings on application may be abandoned before results have time to show.

Concentration logic means setting the level where an active performs and skin stays comfortable. That point is decided through published evidence and careful bench work.

Ingredient Compatibility and Delivery Decide Real-World Results

A multi-active formula works only if its actives can share one environment. Ingredient compatibility, formulation stability and delivery decide whether a well-chosen active still performs when the product reaches skin.

Compatibility and Stability Risks Can Reduce Active Performance

Ascorbic acid is typically formulated in an acidic environment, while other actives may have different preferred stability or performance ranges. Oxidation-sensitive ingredients such as retinoids may require stabilisation strategies, protective packaging or controlled formulation conditions. These are formulation considerations. Mapped early, many combinations work well together.

The same discipline carries into stability evaluation. Manisha, working within our R&D team, monitors samples for changes in colour, odour, pH drift and viscosity. A formula that performs well at bench scale must still withstand production-scale mixing, heat and filling.

Does a higher active percentage mean better skin penetration?

Not necessarily. A higher percentage can increase the driving force for diffusion, but penetration also depends on molecular size, solubility, formula pH, the vehicle and barrier condition. Active delivery systems influence how effectively an ingredient is presented to and interacts with the intended skin site.
